The post Health and Medical Insurance Options for Mexico first appeared on Mexperience.]]>
Mexico’s public health service does not have reciprocal agreements with any other country, and US Medicare is not available here so visitors and foreign residents need to make specific provision for their health care needs. In the event of an incident that requires healthcare or medical attention, you’ll need to pay out-of-pocket, or arrange a health or medical insurance policy that is valid in Mexico and provide suitable cover for you and your partner/family in the event of an accident or illness. This article explains the various options for visitors, extended stays, and foreign residents.

Health Insurance for Short Visits to Mexico

If you’re visiting Mexico for a short period —on a vacation or short business trip, for example— travel insurance policies which cover you for a limited time while you’re away from home should suffice. These might be provided by your current healthcare provider (but double-check the small print), through an employer’s health plan if you’re here on a short business visit, or through purchase of a short-trip travel insurance policy. You can learn more about short-term travel health insurance on our guide to insurance in Mexico.

Health Insurance for Extended Stays in Mexico

If you plan to be in Mexico for an extended stay, but don’t intent to take-up residence in Mexico – for example, you might take a sabbatical, a volunteer job, or plan to stay in Mexico for six months or less, then a short-term travel insurance policy might not cover your needs. In these circumstances, you may consider a private health insurance policy that covers you locally and, if you retain health coverages in your home country, you might also consider taking out a medical evacuation plan in the event of a serious medical incident that requires you to be flown home for treatment and recovery.

Health Insurance for Foreign Residents in Mexico

If you intend to apply for, or have, legal residency in Mexico, a travel insurance policy won’t be valid as these are designed for people who come to Mexico for a short defined period and return to their country of residence. If you have health insurance cover in your country of residence, the policy might cover you if you’re living abroad (but probably won’t) and in most cases you would need to evacuate back to your home country to avail yourself of any coverages. Therefore, if you plan to reside in Mexico, you should consider health insurance coverages that will be valid and provide adequate care for your needs. Here are the options:

Mexico’s IMSS Medical Insurance

Foreign residents (temporary or permanent) can apply for the Mexican public healthcare insurance system known an IMSS on a voluntary basis which provides access to certain doctors, clinics and hospitals in Mexico. Some medications are also covered under this plan. Coverage costs depend on your age; restrictions and limitations apply and, like all publicly-funded healthcare systems, patient demand is usually higher than the supply of services, so you may have to wait for care. (Note also that people who are enrolled in IMSS through an employer get priority over those who enroll voluntarily.) This article explains the IMSS medical insurance system in Mexico.

Private Medical Insurance in Mexico

Most foreign residents who can afford to do so will take out a private medical insurance plan that covers their personal needs and gives them direct access to private doctors, clinics and hospitals in Mexico. Policies are crafted to the individual situation of the person, couple, or family, and premiums depend on things like your age, term of coverage, coverages included, and the deductible you are willing to pay in the event of a claim. You can complete this health insurance request and our associate will contact you personally to discuss your situation and needs, and provide a no-obligation quote for you to review.

Medical Evacuation from Mexico

If you are resident in Mexico and continue to have health coverage in your home country then you might consider a medical evacuation plan to enable you to get home for treatment and to convalesce close to your own doctors and family in the event that you experience a serious accident or health event (e.g. heart attack) while you are here. Note that medical evacuation insurance coverages only cover evacuation costs in serious cases and so you’ll need to get routine or non-critical health matters attended to in Mexico.

How Busy is the US-Mexico Land Border? https://www.mexperience.com/us-mexico-land-border-traffic-passengers/ https://www.mexperience.com/us-mexico-land-border-traffic-passengers/#comments Thu, 07 Mar 2024 18:04:02 +0000 https://www.mexperience.com/?p=42264---50321ad2-88bc-497c-9bd4-abc0e29f97a3 The US-Mexico land border is the world’s busiest land crossing. Data reveal the colossal volume —and types— of crossings traversing the land border each year

The post How Busy is the US-Mexico Land Border? first appeared on Mexperience.]]>
Mexico and the United States share a 1,954-mile land border, stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. This land border (parts of which encompass the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo) is the busiest land border in the world and strategically important to both countries for their shared interests in commerce, culture, and tourism. The movement of people and vehicles across this land space is a cornerstone of the economic well-being of all Mexican and US border states.

The US Department of Transport collects detailed records of border crossings every day and very helpfully makes those data available via its website.

To better understand the scope of these passenger and vehicle crossings, we downloaded the data for 2019 —before the land border became restricted in 2020— to get a handle on how much traffic typically crosses the US-Mexico land border.

This is what the data reveal:

US-Mexico land border crossings by type (2019)

The US DOT’s data classifies ‘crossing types’ into the groups listed in the table below. The numbers represent ‘crossings’ not unique numbers of people and vehicles. The data reveal that in 2019 there were:

Crossings Type Volume
Passengers in Personal Vehicles 136,890,096
Pedestrians 49,175,926
Bus Passengers 2,153,331
Train Passengers 9,568
Personal Vehicles 73,085,262
Buses 151,541
Trains 11,673
Trucks 6,440,255
Truck Containers (Full) 4,766,152
Truck Containers (Empty) 1,754,507
Rail Containers (Full) 491,994
Rail Containers (Empty) 607,840

Summary analysis of land border crossings (2019)

There were 239,567,746 passenger crossings in 2019, of which:

 • 188,228,921 (79%) were Passengers in Personal Vehicles; and
 • 49,175,926 (20%) were Pedestrians;
 • there were 2,153,331 Bus Passengers (1%), and
 • 9,568 Train Passengers (negligible %).

There were 79,828,599 vehicle crossings in 2019, of which:

 • 73,085,262 (92%) were Personal Vehicles;
 • 6,591,796 (7.8%) were Commercial Trucks; and
 • 151,541 (0.2%) were Buses.

Related to the transportation of goods by road and rail, in 2019 there were:

 • 6,520,659 Truck Container crossings of which 4,766,152 were full and 1,754,507 were empty;
 • in addition, there were 1,099,834 Rail Container crossings of which 491,994 were full and 607,840 were empty.

Busiest US-Mexico land border crossing points

This table shows the the top 10 border crossings along the US-Mexico land border in 2019, by volume and type. San Ysidro is the busiest crossing by far, followed by El Paso. Most of the the annual crossings are made by personal vehicles and their passengers, and pedestrians.

Crossing Name Crossing Type Volume
San Ysidro Personal Vehicle Passengers 25,845,348
El Paso Personal Vehicle Passengers 18,703,243
San Ysidro Personal Vehicles 14,979,363
Otay Mesa Personal Vehicle Passengers 11,372,048
San Ysidro Pedestrians 10,799,398
El Paso Personal Vehicles 10,528,448
Laredo Personal Vehicle Passengers 10,373,765
Brownsville Personal Vehicle Passengers 9,416,489
Calexico Personal Vehicle Passengers 9,005,892
Hidalgo Personal Vehicle Passengers 8,267,555

Data Source: You can learn more about border crossing volumes and types and download the data from the US DOT website. The data sets also contain crossings between the US and Canadian land border, which are not included in the data presented in this article.

Mexperience Mexico Newsletter — March 2022

March highlights in Mexico

March heralds the beginning of springtime in Mexico, although the weather this time of year continues to be changeable with wind storms that may appear suddenly, too. Air temperatures are beginning to climb again —even in the typically cooler regions of the north-central and western highlands— and clock-time is about to be sprung forward by one hour, setting the scene for lighter evenings. The ‘snowbirds’ (part-time residents overwintering in Mexico) are entering their final stretch before they make preparations to return to their home countries for late spring and summer.

Benito Juárez and clocks

March is host to another long weekend holiday, commemorating the birth of Benito Juárez—the country’s first president and one of the most revered of Mexico’s political leaders. The March 21st holiday was moved to the third Monday in March which this year happens to coincide precisely with the date of the commemoration.

The spring clock change is on the horizon; Baja California and locations along the Mexico-US border will move their clocks forward by one hour on Sunday March 13th; most of Mexico moves its clocks forward again on the first Sunday in April. The states of Sonora and Quintana Roo very sensibly leave their clocks alone.

Mexperience Mexico Newsletter — February 2022

February highlights in Mexico

The Jacaranda trees begin to bloom across Mexico during mid-to-late February, dressing their branches with bursts of color and afterwards covering the gardens, streets, and lanes beneath them with a purple carpet of flowers. This cycle signals a seasonal tipping point as air temperatures warm-up in late February and herald the start of spring, around mid-March.

Seasonal transitions

This is a remarkable time of year to be in Mexico. Notwithstanding the onset of the dry season and landscapes which are looking increasingly parched, temperatures along the coasts are pleasantly warm, mornings break bright in the mountain highlands, and the cool morning air feels fresh, crisp, and vibrant. Sunsets are spectacular this time of year, as the dry landscapes lend dust to rise high into the atmosphere that blends with setting sun rays to create compositions of extraordinary late evening light.

Residency qualification

For people seeking residency in Mexico, we have learned that Mexican consulates abroad are using the daily minimum wage level for 2022 and none appear to be applying the UMA measures. This means that those seeking residency on the basis of ‘economic solvency‘ must now prove an income of at least c.US$2,500 a month, or a savings/investment account balance(s) totaling at least c.US$45,000.

January highlights in Mexico

Winter has arrived in Mexico; temperatures in January can collapse dramatically after sundown in some highland towns and in the northern deserts, although daytime temperatures tend to be pleasantly warm on the mountain, and these are the most comfortable months along the coasts, with pleasantly warm temperatures. Regardless of where you are in Mexico, you’ll enjoy long daylight hours here through the winter months.

January is the month when the dry season makes itself apparent; we have articles to help you learn about this with tips for living well when rainwater is scarce.

New Year celebrations are followed by a gathering to eat Rosca de Reyes on January 6th —Epiphany— that also marks the end of the Guadalupe-Reyes festive period in Mexico.

We published a brand-new eBook this month: the guide to Living & Retirement in Mexico. This free eBook is the most comprehensive and detailed guide you’ll find about exploring and planning a new life in Mexico and helps you weave together the components for a fruitful lifestyle here.

We’ll be updating all our Mexico eBooks to 2022 editions during January, in particular, the Mexico Immigration Guide and the Mexico Cost of Living Guide with the latest data for each one. All our Mexico eBooks are available as free downloads.

Mexico raised its Minimum Wage by 23% for 2022, and this might have an impact on people seeking to qualify economically for residency in Mexico. Mexican consulates abroad are still using Minimum Wage as their basis for calculations; they might switch to UMA in 2022; we’ll monitor this and keep you apprised.

January and February are ‘peak viewing season’ for the the Monarch Butterflies in the mountains west of Mexico City. They’ll begin to leave the oyamel forests where they’ve been overwintering around the beginning of March.

We’ve created a new section on Mexperience that helps you to discover Professional Assistance Services in Mexico—it includes firms that can help with matters like real estate closings, legal services, and specialized consultancy work.

We hope you have enjoyed the festive season and wish you a very happy and abundant New Year in 2022!

Mexperience Mexico Newsletter — December 2021

December highlights in Mexico

As the final storms of the rainy season peter out, gardeners across Mexico are recommencing their weekly watering routines to keep plants from drying out in the gardens, and on patios and terraces as we enter the dry season.

The fall clock changes have created an exchange from ‘lighter evenings’ to ‘lighter mornings’ although as this article about Mexico’s long daylight hours describes, you’ll enjoy plenty of daylight through the winter and the quality of the light here is extraordinary. Fall will yield to winter on December 21st.

Christmas preparations are underway. The festivity period known in Mexico as Guadalupe-Reyes will begin on December 12th, Día de Guadalupe, and end on January 6th, Dia de Los Reyes Magos. This month’s newsletter helps you to learn about preparing for and enjoying Christmas and New Year in Mexico.

Two significant recent developments from Mexico’s immigration institute include a change to the pattern of time granted to visitors arriving in Mexico using a FMM (visitor permit), and the extension of a special program that allows some people with expired FMMs to apply to exchange these for temporary residency. Further details are shared in the articles and in the updates below.

The Monarch Butterflies are arriving to overwinter in the mountains west of Mexico City, and now’s the time to make plans: learn about the butterflies and contact our travel associate if you’d like to arrange an excursion to one of the sanctuaries.

As the year draws to a close, we’re making preparations to publish the 2022 editions of our Mexico eBooks —all available free— and we’re also at work composing additional titles for the new year.

If you’re driving your foreign-plated car to Mexico this winter, remember to cancel your vehicle’s import permit (TIP) when you leave, and ensure that your vehicle is adequately covered by auto insurance that’s valid in Mexico.

We wish you a very cheerful Christmas holiday season and a New Year filled with joy and abundance.

November highlights in Mexico

Autumn is taking hold in Mexico; the last of the seasonal rains are falling, the clocks get turned back by one hour, and people locally are making preparations for their Day of the Dead ofrendas. This month’s newsletter includes highlights to our collection of articles which help you to discover Day of the Dead traditions; November 2nd is a Public Holiday.

November heralds the return of the Monarch Butterflies that overwinter in the mountains west of Mexico City and if you’ve been intending to witness this natural phenomenon, now is the time to make plans and our articles and connections can help. This month is also host to one of Mexico’s long ‘holiday weekends’—commemorating Día de la Revolución.

Our Mexico Assistance Services connect to service providers that can help you to realize your Mexico lifestyle and leisure plans, helping you to take the next steps and bridge the gap between your plans and aspirations and making those things happen.

If you’re someone who continually uses Mexico’s visitor permit to re-enter Mexico as a ‘perpetual visitor’ we’ve been hearing additional reports of travelers’ intentions being questioned at the border. If you plan to stay in Mexico longer term we recommend you apply for legal residency; this month’s newsletter has some helpful articles about that.

We’ve introduced a new section on the website this month, called Places to Live in Mexico, that gathers together guides to locations in Mexico as well as a collection of related lifestyle articles that share insight and local knowledge that’s helpful when you’re considering options and short-listing possible places to settle in.

Finally, a reminder that all the titles in our Mexico eBooks library are available for free download and offer you comprehensive knowledge about living and lifestyle in Mexico.

Thank you for your patronage, and thank you for sharing this newsletter with your friends, family, and colleagues.

Mexico-US Land Border Opening to Vaccinated Visitors https://www.mexperience.com/mexico-land-border-restrictions-closure-covid-19/ https://www.mexperience.com/mexico-land-border-restrictions-closure-covid-19/#comments Sat, 16 Oct 2021 17:00:16 +0000 https://www.mexperience.com/?p=41953 A two-stage reopening program of the Mexico-US land border will require all visitors to the United States to be fully vaccinated

The post Mexico-US Land Border Opening to Vaccinated Visitors first appeared on Mexperience.]]>
The land border restrictions imposed by the US on visitors by land from Mexico, introduced in March 2020 due to Covid-19, will begin to be lifted from November 2021—but only for visitors who can show an approved vaccination certificate.

US land border to open to vaccinated visitors only

The new rules require visitors (people who do not hold a US passport or Green Card) who wish to enter the United States by land from Mexico to present evidence showing that they are ‘fully vaccinated’ with an approved Covid vaccine brand.

US citizens and US permanent residents (“Green Card” holders) are not required to show proof of Covid vaccination when using the land border crossing into US.

The new policies were announced by the US Department of Homeland Security on October 12, and Mexico’s foreign secretary gave a press conference about them on October 13.

Visitors from Mexico to the US traveling on rail and sea ferries will also need to demonstrate proof of vaccination to enter the US.

Two-stage opening plan: November 2021

According to the rules outlined by the DHS, from November 2021 visitors to the US wanting to enter for ‘non essential’ reasons —that include visiting friends and family, tourism, and shopping— will need to demonstrate proof of being ‘fully vaccinated’ at the border.

January 2022: all visitors to USA must be fully vaccinated

As of January 2022, all visitors wishing to enter the United States, regardless of whether they are traveling for ‘essential’ reasons or not, will need to demonstrate proof of being ‘fully vaccinated’ at the border.

Traveling to Mexico from the United States

Mexico has not imposed any legal restrictions on passengers or vehicles entering Mexico by land from the United States.

You do not need to show proof of a Covid vaccination to enter Mexico.

We are hearing that American citizens are driving and walking into Mexico without hindrance.

Mexico tourist/visitor permits (FMMs) and temporary import permits (TIPs) for vehicles are being issued as normal.

If you have a legal residency card for Mexico, —or residency visa sticker to exchange for a Residente Temporal or Residente Permanente card— you can cross the border by land to Mexico using that permit or visa.

See this article on expiring residency permits if your existing Mexican residency permit is near or past its expiry date.

Flights between the USA and Mexico

The land border restrictions did not affect flights, but policies are now being aligned to make it necessary for all visitors to the United States to be vaccinated to whether they arrive by air, land, ferry, or rail.

Flights to the US from Mexico

The USA has announced separate policies for visitors to the United States entering by air that also require visitors to the US to be fully vaccinated to enter the country.

Flights to Mexico from the US

Mexico does not require air passengers flying to the country to be vaccinated; however, visitors flying from or through Mexico to the US will be required to show proof of vaccination.

Check before you fly

We strongly recommend that you check current rules, restrictions and requirements with the airline you intend to travel with before you fly.

If you have a foreign-plated vehicle in Mexico

If you are driving into Mexico (or currently in Mexico) with a foreign-plated vehicle with a TIP (Temporary Import Permit) we understand that Banjercito —the Agency that administers the permits— is not giving any extensions to TIP expiry dates due to Covid.

If you fail to drive your vehicle out of Mexico before the TIP expires, the vehicle will become illegal in Mexico (this affects the validity of you your auto insurance) and you will lose your deposit. A TIP’s validity is usually tied to a Visitor Permit (FMM) or a Residente Temporal permit.

Land border restrictions have been extended to October 21st, 2021

Mexico’s land border restrictions have been extended again; however, we are hearing that American citizens are driving and walking into Mexico without hindrance. Tourist permits (FMMs) and temporary vehicle import permits (TIPs) are being issued as normal. This article summarizes the restrictions and the comments section contains anecdotal notes left by local travelers. Note that Flights between the US and Mexico are not affected by this restriction.

October highlights in Mexico

Autumn arrives in Mexico during September, and although the seasonal rains continue bringing color and fragrance to the flora, we are experiencing the last weeks of the rainy season before commencing the ‘long dry’ season ahead.

A significant earthquake shook southern-central regions in September providing a salient reminder that Mexico is susceptible to seismic activity; this month we feature an article about preparing your home for earthquakes.

If you’re thinking about a move to Mexico (or relocating within Mexico), this month’s feature on discovering the towns of Lake Chapala is worth reading; and our new associate can help you to move and find a home there.

Mexico’s central bank put a colorful $20-peso note into circulation in September, along with three new $20-peso spending coins; as well as three $10-peso collectors’ coins—the collectors’ coins are minted in Troy ounces of pure silver.

As the season turns from summer to fall, the clocks will turn back one-hour at the end of October (or early November in some places); and preparations are being made for Day of the Dead festivities; with cooler nights in the highlands, we can look forward to enjoying frothy hot chocolate laced with cinnamon and delicious Pan de Muerto. November also heralds the return of the Monarch Butterflies that overwinter in the mountains west of Mexico City. This month’s newsletter shares articles and local knowledge to help you prepare for autumn.

Thank you for your patronage, and thank you for sharing this newsletter with your friends, family, and colleagues. Wishing you a very enjoyable start to the autumn season in Mexico!

Note that Flights between the US and Mexico are not affected by this restriction, although international passengers flying to the US need to get tested and Canada has introduced testing requirements for people entering the country via its land border.

August highlights in Mexico

August heralds the peak of the summer season in Mexico: the refreshing rain season is in full swing, school children are on holiday, and while Mexico doesn’t come to a standstill as many European countries do during the month of August, the rhythm certainly feels more gentle as people ease themselves into a summer mood.

Mexico’s beach locations are entering their most hot and humid period of the year, whereas the colonial highlands remain temperate due to their high elevation. This month’s newsletter includes some articles about climates in different places across Mexico’s diverse topography.

Mexperience Mexico Newsletter — July 2021

Land border restrictions have been extended to July 21st, 2021

Mexico’s land border restrictions have been extended again; however, we are hearing that American citizens are driving and walking into Mexico without hindrance. Tourist permits (FMMs) and temporary vehicle import permits (TIPs) are being issued as normal. This article summarizes the restrictions and the comments section contains anecdotal notes left by local travelers. Note that Flights between the US and Mexico are not affected by this restriction, although international passengers flying to the US need to get tested and Canada has introduced testing requirements for people entering the country via its land border.
